- VACC: It's Time To Change Victoria's 'Rego' Payment

VACC is demanding the next Victorian Government introduces a new option for paying vehicle registrations. Currently,
owners of cars, four wheel drives, vans, trucks, motorcycles, prime
movers and buses in Victoria have just one payment option for a twelve
month period for their vehicle registration, that being a one lump sum
(only concession card holders have the option of a six month payment). Ahead
of the State Election on November 27, VACC has repeated its call for
the next Victorian Government to enable VicRoads, the fee collectors,
to introduce a six month 'rego' payment option. "An up-front, one
off vehicle registration payment is outdated and out of step with other
household bills. In this regard, Victoria has fallen behind," VACC
Executive Director, David Purchase, said. "Australians can spread
their financial burden by paying by installments for most essential
goods and services, for example, mortgages, rates, utilities, motor
finance and insurance, so why can’t they break their ‘rego’ into
bite-sized payments too?" said Mr Purchase. At over $600 per
annum, vehicle registration and TAC fees payable on the average family
car are one of the largest Government levied charges in the household
budget. Many families own two cars and, therefore, registration fees
are a significant cost to them. Unlike vehicle owners in other
States and Territories, Victorians cannot opt to pay registration and
compulsory insurance fees in two or more installments. VACC says the
introduction of a variable payment option would be simple because the
infrastructure and technology already exists. "A variable payment
option would also assist Victorian small business owners. Licensed
Motor Car Traders (LMCTs), registering cars, motorcycles, or commercial
vehicles on behalf of consumers, or for stock, have to pay the twelve
month registration even though the vehicle is usually sold within the
first month," Mr Purchase said.
