Röhrl Puts Porsche 904 To The Test
German racing legend Walter Röhrl has just
recently borrowed a 1964 Carrera (904) GTS from the Porsche museum for
a nice little burn around the track.
For those of you who don't know, Walter Röhrl was
a top World Rally Championship driver in the 70s and 80s, having won
the Monte Carlo Rally four times driving for four different marques.
His Fiat 131 Abarth carried him to the 1980 title, clinched with his
victory in that year's San Remo rally, but it was arguably his
equivalent success in 1982 that impressed most of all, with Röhrl
fending off audacious four-wheel drive opposition, led by Audi's
resurgent Michèle Mouton, to take the title, by virtue of consistency,
in his increasingly outmoded rear-drive Opel Ascona 400. It was also
during this time that he won the African Rally Championship, in 1982.
The 1964 904 GTS, officially called the Porsche
Carrera GTS and produced between 1964-1965, featured a mid-engine
layout that was inherited from the 718, also known as the RSK (from the
German term for racing, Rennsport), the factory's leading race car. It
was powered by a flat-four cylinder engine that was mated to a
five-speed transmission, producing 148kW of power.
Take a look at this video of Walter Röhrl putting
the old sports car through its paces.
