Volvo Hybrid

Get your extension cords ready, because the time has come to plug in your car and drive (assuming you un-plug before you drive off, it's a simple mistake but one people may make. We aren't implying you would make that mistake - but everyone has their off days. This is all off topic and besides the point, stop distracting me imaginary reader!)

Everyone's favourite car to make fun of (and for old people to look under the steering wheel of), Volvo, have big plans in 2012 to unveil a range of electric and hybrid cars onto the market.

Volvo will be producing its own four cylinder engine with plans to turbocharge that sucker and add it to hybrid drivetrains.

According to Volvo’ senior vice president for product, Lex Kerssemakers, this sadly means, for car nuts, that Volvo will say goodbye to its 5 and 6 cylinder engines

According to Kerssemakers, Volvo are now ready to release a new S40 (including a wagon variant called the V50) which aimed to increase fuel efficiency. "We had to look at what we were and what we represented to our buyers".

"We have always been seen as a company that's very aware of its social responsibility - and that includes the emissions of our car" he said recently.

"With an electric hybrid drive with 200Nm... you have a very fast car that is capable of very low fuel consumption" Kerssemakers said in regards to the fact that the new four cylinder will be available in 110kW to 220kW power outputs and will deliver up to an impressive 440Nm of torque.

"Instantly, you have a sports car. It's a very clear choice for us - ditch the cylinders... ultimately, we will be a four-cylinder car company with hybrid and plug-in electric capability".

We are living in exciting times folks. First electric cars, then Ashton Kutcher on Two and a Half Men - where will it end? We guess some kind of robotic death ray.
