Ingolstadt, Germany
— Expected to be revealed at a European motor show later in the
year, either Paris or Frankfurt, the Audi S4 has been spied for the
first time with no disguise. The Dutch Autoweek
publication snapped these photos of both the sedan and wagon (avant)
versions of the 2009 Audi S4, which is likely to be on sale in Europe
at the end of the year. Looking like any other new Audi A4 model,
except for the quad exhaust pipes and S4 badging, the new performance
model will be powered by a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine. Expected
to be designated the 3.0 TFSI, this new engine should give the AWD
sports saloon strong performance, but details of its power outputs are
sketchy. Though there will be detuned versions of the 6-cylinder
3.0 TFSI in other models, such as the A6 and upcoming A7, outputting
around 215kW (290hp), the S4 is expected to get the a potent 248kW
(333hp) tune with around 420Nm of torque. Rivalling the BMW 335i sedan, the new Audi S4 will be around 45kg lighter than the previous Audi S4. The supercharged V6 engine will be mated to a choice of either 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions. While
the engine may have ditched a couple of cylinders and lost some
displacement, the lighter car is expected to offer even better
performance and efficiency. Because it is expected to be lighter than the RS4 and will develop peak
torque more efficiently thanks to its supercharged nature, there's a chance
the S4 could be a more exciting drive than the V8-powered RS4. Because superchargers don't have as much boost lag as a turbocharger, it is expected to be the most responsive S4 yet. More news on the 2009 Audi S4 as we get it. Related
