At the Los Angeles International Auto Show, Jaguar announced
that it had just agreed on a new model to enter production.
The Jaguar F-Type roadster, judging by the sketches, looks
set to turn a few heads. It will be the fifth model in Jaguars
product line-up and is likely to reaffirm the company's roots
as a pure-bred sportscar maker.
One of the original marques that started the sportscar trend
in the 50s, Jaguar, now owned by Ford, had conducted a 12-month
study to determine a number of things.
Firstly, could such a car be competitive in world markets?
The study proved many a point, but at the end of the day,
Jaguar has stated that it wants to make the F-Type's price
very competitive.
Dr Wolfgang Reitzle, Jaguar’s chairman, said: “Jaguar is
one of the most evocative brands in the world and there is
a renewed commitment at Jaguar to create cars that stir people’s
emotions.
"The overwhelmingly positive reaction across the globe
to last year’s concept has convinced Jaguar to build the F-Type
roadster.”
Joining the XK series of sportscar, the new F-Type will be
smaller (thus lighter) though not much else is known about
the specifications. We expect the company to use a supercharged
V6, saving the V8 for the older siblings.
Dr Reitzle continued: "Due to the unprecedented growth
and intensity of new product development at Jaguar today,
it will take us around three years to deliver the F-TYPE roadster
program to market.
"While F-TYPE will embody all the passion and excitement
of past Jaguar roadsters such as XK120 and E-Type, it clearly
signals a fresh direction for Jaguar sports cars in the future."
We can expect the new Jaguar F-Type in 2003. Start saving
now.
