Munich,
Germany - This brightly coloured BMW M3 was spied
testing at the Nurburgring back in October has now been identified. It
is the 2010 M3 GTS.
The 2010 M3 GTS is a refined, track-focused
version of the current 3 series-based E92 generation.
This road legal machine has a tuned 4.4-litre V8 that is based on the 4.0-litre engine found in the standard M3. The M3
GTS boosts power from 309kW to 335kW.
Providing the rear wheels with all this extra
power is a 7-speed M dual clutch transmission (M-DCT) with adapted
shift characteristics.
The M3 GTS features an adjustable rear wing and
front splitter for increased cornering precision, some 19-inch alloy
wheels wrapped in 255/35 tyres up front and 285/30 tyres at the rear.
To increase stopping performance, tucked behind
the wheels are carbon-ceramic discs brakes with six-piston calipers up
front and and four-piston units at the rear.
Upgrades to the suspension include the use of
yellow springs for a threaded suspension while the rear axle support is
reported to be bolted in place.
The BMW M3 GTS has set its sights on beating the
old M3 CSL's Nürburgring lap time. To ensure this is made possible BMW
has made use of a further lightened carbon fibre roof, which reduces
weight by nearly 200kg, making for a total weight of 1490kg.
BMW has also made use of light body-contoured
seats, a new titanium rear silencer and removed the air conditioning
and the rear seats.
To further increase the M3 GTS's track
credibility, a roll cage, fire extinguisher, race seats and five-point
harnesses are installed.
The M3 GTS will be available in European dealers
next May and will be priced at around 115,000 euros (AU$187,762).
