Laupheim, Germany —
If the BMW M3 wasn't fast enough, using cutting edge engine technology
to squeeze 309kW from 4.0-litres and 8-cylinders of naturally aspirated
engine, German tuner Hamann has begun releasing its upgrade kits for
the 3 Series hero car. Hamann has released the details on two tuning stages for the rear-wheel German sports coupe, cleverly named Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1:
This consists of mild engine tuning to already rapid M3. The ECU is
recoded to deliver a different fuel map and that provides the car with
an extra 20kW of power, taking peak power to 324kW. Torque
rises 25Nm to 425Nm in total thanks to the new fuel mapping. No other
modification are made, which highlights just how potent BMW's
4.0-litre V8 engine is. With the Level 1
tune, top speed rises from 250km/h to 300km/h thanks to the removal of
the speed limiting software. The zero to 100km/h sprint also improves
slightly from its 4.8 second factory claim. Level 2: Using
a similar ECU revision as Level 1, the next level costs a bit more but
also liberates more power from the high-revving BMW V8 engine. By
including a stainless steel exhaust system, Hamann's Level 2 tune adds
26kW of power and 48Nm of torque taking the final BMW M3 figures to
335kW and 448Nm. The German tuning company says the new exhaust also
adds "An earthy sound" that "will delight the BMW-pilot from now on". Top speed is a super car-like 320km/h (198mph) and again, the benchmark acceleration sprint is quicker. Well
known for its alloy rims, Hamann also offers a range wheel upgrades in
19- and 20-inch sizes with more width, allowing for wider tyres. The German tuner also offers an aerodynamic body kit for the M3. "The sportive-dynamic front spoiler, which goes hand in hand
with the rear skirt and the rear spoiler, reduces the lifting forces
and forms a whole new look," explains Hamann in a press release. "The optical link between front and rear is
accomplished with the Hamann side skirts and the shapely roof spoiler". Chassis
upgrades can be implemented by Hamann, which in effect sharpen the BMW
M3's handling for even better steering response (but at the cost of
ride quality). As well as a lowering
system, dropping the ride height by 25mm and 15mm front and rear
respectively, Hamann has developed an adjustable coil-over suspension
kit. The brakes can also be replaced
with the German tuner's own perforated and internally ventilated
brake discs measuring 405mm x 34mm (front) and 380mm x 28mm (rear)
pinched by more powerful 6-pot calipers up front and 4-potters on the
rear axle. And
if a tweaked engine, chassis, and bodywork isn't enough, Hamann can
even customise the interior of your M3. Everything from gear shifters,
to hand brakes, pedals and floor mats can be tailored to suit. Related
