The caravan of the 21st century?

With room for two, the Capsule Caravan concept is
aimed at city dwellers who want weekend escapes

Poole, England — This futuristic caravan design has been created to appeal to a new era of drivers, the urban iPod generation.

We're not sure if the design will take off, but the idea makes a lot of sense.

The circular sleeper is a light-weight, compact caravan that can be towed by smaller vehicles and looks, well, like a pod.

It's creator, David Tonkinson, says the caravan concept can fit into a normal parking space and is suited to those living in urban areas who want to get away from the city at the weekends.

Once parked, the Capsule Caravan can house two people, expanding in width thanks to linear actuators.

There are then two segments within the concept, referred to as the Comfort Pod and the Service Pod.

The Service Pod contains all the cleaning systems and storage areas, including things like the water system for washing up, a power supply to connect the toasted sandwich maker, and storage space for cutlery and other tools.

The Comfort Pod is where you relax, featuring a built-in amplifier and stereo that can be easily reached from the small couch. There's also a compact table that flips around and forms up with the couch to form a double bed.

There's also various power points in the Comfort Pod and a large window that has an electrochromatic coating whose opacity can be altered from transparent to solid at the touch of a button, negating the need for blinds or curtains.

While it's no luxury caravan, the compactness of the concept will increase its appeal to the increasing number of people living in inner-city apartments, who have limited garage and storage space.

Seeing as this is concept, there is also scope for more features to be added, such as a micro spa, fold-out BBQ, and perhaps even a massaging seat or two.

The Capsule Caravan brings the realm of mobile homes, traditionally the reserve of mature aged people, to a much younger demographic.

It could single handedly change the way caravans are viewed while bringing a new generation of weekend trekkers to the market.

Aimed at space-conscious city dwellers, the Capsule Caravan concept is a lightweight and cost effective method of getting away at the weekend.
