How safe is your car?

New website set up by TAC
to
rate crashworthiness of cars

Buying a car used to be a case of simply sticking with a
brand name you like, such as Ford or Holden or Toyota, and
picking a style and colour that suits your personality.
Today, however, safety is often in the top five on drivers'
purchasing checklists, and a rather impressive new site has
been set up by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC)
to better help buyers gain an understanding of how safe specific
road vehicles are.
The basic idea behind the site is to give potential vehicle
buyers an idea of how well new and used modern cars will protect
their occupants in the event of a crash.
The site provides ANCAP (New Car Assessment Program) data
on roughly 80 per cent of Australian-sold cars built after
1990, and it regularly updates the info when new cars hit
the market.

here's a few of the safest new cars on offer in our local
market today:
Renault Laguna
In the large car category, the French-made Laguna is the
safest car in Australia beating off Magna, Commodore and Falcon
by registering a five-star ANCAP rating.
Ford Falcon
According to the new website, the BA Falcon is safer than
the VY Commodore, and while both scored four out of five stars,
the broken down score for the Falcon was 27.27 out of 34,
while the Commodore scored 26.74 out of 34.
Subaru Forester
The Subaru Forester sits atop the 4WD category, with an impressive
five stars. It scored exceptionally well in the side impact
crash test (16 out of 16) and also in the pole test (2 out
of 2), with a total of 32.78/34.
Peugeot 307
One of the safest small cars on the market today, and another
Frenchman to sit atop its respective category, the 307 scored
four stars, and when you break down the stats, it scored 29.60/34,
more than one whole point ahead of the second placed Toyota
Echo.
