Stuttgart, Germany —
Porsche Design is the world famous sports car maker's
industrial/luxury design group. The company generally develops stylish
luxury goods, such as watches, pens, eyewear, luggage and some of the
world's most sought after cigar paraphernalia. But until now, Porsche Design has never worked on a Porsche. Which is why the new Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 is so special. Only
777 units will be built ensuring it's exclusivity, and like all
Porsche's it will offer a level of driver integration that has been
honed over the decades, not to mention searing acceleration and top
notch braking. Porsche Design took the Cayman S, a
rear-wheel drive sports coupe powered by a 3.4-litre 217kW
6-cylinder engine, and added a range of designer features, including a
lavish new interior. The new car "is a nod to
Porsche Design and the famous Chronograph 1s designed by Ferdinand
Alexander Porsche precisely 35 years previously" says the German design
company, and the cabin is upholstered in acres of lots of
dark luxury materials: leather and Alcantara is everywhere, from the
seats, to the steering wheel, gear lever and even the roof lining. Porsche
Design also spent time working on the finer details, such as the
instrument dials, which like it's luxury time pieces are finished with
exacting detail. "The vehicle's technical features are
equally sophisticated," explains Porsche Design, adding that beneath
the lowered body (it sits 10mm lower than the normal Cayman S),
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) actively controls the
hardness of the shock absorbers and it features a special Sport mode
that can be activated at the touch of a button for a really dynamic
driving feel. Adding to the cars dark interior and
exterior appearance - the car can be ordered in two colours, black and
matte black - the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 also features dark
racing stripes along its flanks and across the hood, roof, and boot.
Adding to the flamboyant styling, 5mm spacers combine with large
19-inch wheels from the Porsche 911 Turbo, giving the car even more
presence. The 5-spoke designs are fitted with 235/35 ZR19 front tyres 265/35 ZR19 rear tyres. Porsche
Design, known for it's prestigious luggage designs, includes an
interesting briefcase with all Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1
models. The briefcase contains a number of goodies: Pocket knife
Sunglasses
Flat Six chronograph timepiece
Pen
Key ring
Matching
the limited edition Porsche Cayman S's black colour scheme all the
briefcase items are black too - even the knife blade. If this new model
provokes high levels of interest, it is expected that Porsche Design
will likewise tailor limited edition versions of the 911 and possibly
even the Cayenne SUV, complete with matching luggage and the corporate
survival equipment. If this is the Porsche Design Edition 1, we could join the dots and estimate that Edition 2 is only a handshake away. According
to a statement, the market launch of this black Cayman with exclusive
Porsche Design equipment, including the briefcase, will begin in
Germany in November 2007 and in the United States in January 2008. At
the time or writing it is unknown if the model will arrive in Australia. The
Porsche Design Studio, created by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche 35
years ago, has rapidly become a top international name for industrial
design, luxury items, and consumer goods and for the first time ever
the design group has turned it's attention to Porsche sports cars. The price tag for the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 is €69,942. That translate to about A$115,000.
