Corvette ZR1 Super Cop: Supercharged Law Enforcement

Motoring Channel Staff - 31/January/2008

Corvette ZR1 Police Car

Detroit, America — Move over Knight Rider, the real crime fighting cop car has arrived. This one sports a supercharged, intercooled, 6.2-litre V8 engine that eats perpetrators for breakfast.

Perhaps that's stretching the truth a little, as this police vehicle is not intended to be used by the American law enforcement agencies. Though it sure would be interesting.

But like the ill-fated WRX's that were briefly used by Australia law enforcement agencies, they'd probably end up being totalled anyway.

Based on the new Corvette ZR1 super car, this police pursuit vehicle has 462kW of power and a spleen-popping 806Nm of torque thanks to its forced induction powertrain.

Though it's not the fastest fantasy cop car ever conceived - that honour goes to the flimsy British-built Caparo T1 RRV - it would probably be the second quickest, as it's faster than the Lamborghini cop cars that some Italian police forces were gifted with.

It'll hit 100km/h from standstill, presumably after hiding behind some shrubs with a speed detector, in just 3.2 seconds and tops out at around 320km/h. Though with a few police upgrades it could reach 350km/h.

Before the lights, paint job, shotguns, and police data acquisition systems are added, the Corvette features a twin-plate clutch mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and rides on wide 285/30 ZR19 front and 335/25 ZR20 rear tyres.

Other police extras in the Corvette ZR1 police car are expected to include tazers, small firearms, handcuffs, pepper spray, and possibly donuts.
