Geneva, Switzerland — The Italians call Switzerland Svizzera, which is a good way to phonetically describe the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. It was bursting with Svizzera. Known as the Salon International de l'Auto in Swiss-French, the
major automotive announcements in down town Geneva included the unveiling of
the drop-dead gorgeous Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, Saab's new compact
car preview, the 9-X BioHybrid Concept, and of course Volkswagen's
all-new super-stylin' Scirocco. Swiss watches are known for their
precision, quality and luxury, so it was only natural that a few
bedazzling models were unveiled as well. These
included the €1.55 million Bugatti Veyron Fbg
par Hermès, which would fetch around A$2.53 million at the
time of writing. Another
so-expensive-you-have-to-be-quiet-around-it model was the Rolls Royce
Phantom Coupe, essentially a 2-door version of the larger limo and with cyclist friendly reverse opening doors. Ford
also unveiled the next generation Fiesta at long last, and this is
certainly a car that Ford Australia will keen to get it's hands on. Jaguar's new big cat was also a sight for sore eyes, showing off a spiffy new look that hides even more power. There
were also some green car initiatives on display, as Volkswagen has
decided to join Peugeot as one of the first car makers to offer a
diesel hybrid, with the unveiling of the Golf TDI Hybrid. Dream
cars, exotic cars, luxury cars, concept cars, and even a handful of
atmospherically friendly cars were shown at the '08 Geneva Motor Show. Coming hot off the heels of the 2008 Melbourne Motor Show in Australia, we've been in a bit of an auto event haze. Everyone
here at the Motoring Channel has been eating cars for breakfast and
seeing automotive specifications swirling in their lucid dreams. But
that's no complaint. Not even half; these hugely expensive - not to
mention elaborate - shindigs are always a treasure trove of new
product, so without further ado, let's take a closer look at the Geneva
gems for 2008: |
