Priced from around $40k, the Hyundai Grandeur
will compete against the Falcon and Commodore

Sydney, Australia — Hyundai's luxury large car, the new 2009 model Grandeur large sedan will be offered with a new 'green' diesel alongside the well-regarded petrol V6 engine.

Hyundai's new 2.2-litre CRDi turbo diesel engine-equipped Grandeur is priced at $41,990 and comes equipped with a 5-speed automatic and a range of comfort and safety features.

It rivals vehicles like the Toyota Aurion and Holden Commodore and is the first car in its class to offer a diesel engine.

Using 7.9 litres of fuel per 100km on the combined cycle, Hyundai's new CRDi Grandeur is one of the most efficient vehicles in the large car class.

The new Grandeur range spans two models and pricing is as follows:

Hyundai Grandeur 3.8 V6: $39,990
 Hyundai Grandeur 2.2 CRDi: $41,990

Both models come equipped with an impressive range of standard features starting with 5-speed automatic transmissions, upgraded 8-speaker 'JBL' stereo systems with subwoofers (with USB audio input and iPod compatibility), remote central locking, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, trip computer, leather seats plus electric windows and mirrors and Hyundai's new HALO system that lock all doors as soon as you reach 45km/h.

Hyundai offers the new Grandeur in a range of colours that can be matched to black or beige leather interiors.

Seeing as this is Hyundai's luxury model, it gets an electrochromatic auto-dimming interior mirror, rain-sensing wipers, auto dusk-sensing headlights, powered folding outside mirrors with 3 mode auto-dipping in reverse and comes equipped with an impressive number of safety systems such as ESP stability control incorporating traction control (TCS), ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD).

Active head restraints reduce whiplash injuries for the driver and front passenger, while eight airbags - dual front airbags, dual side (thorax) airbags and curtain airbags for all outboard occupants combine with child seat anchorages with ISO Fix points.

As well as these standard features, the 2009 Hyundai Grandeur also gets a new 'face' with the adoption of new front aprons and radiator grilles, new 17-inch alloy wheels and integrated wing indicators.

If you buy the Grandeur diesel model you'll also get a "supply" of latex-free vinyl gloves (to avoid diesel spillages on exposed skin).

The vital statistics of both cars are as follows:

Engine: 3.8-litre Petrol V6
Power: 194kW @ 6000rpm
Torque: 348Nm @ 4500rpm
Efficiency: 10.8 litres/100km

Engine: 2.2-litre Diesel I4
Power: 114kW @ 4000rpm
Torque: 343Nm @ 1800rpm
Efficiency: 7.9 litres/100km

Though the petrol engine has a lot more power and a bit more torque, the engine block is almost twice the size of the diesel engine and as such it can't achieve the low fuel consumption of the 2.2-litre diesel.
