Cernobbio, Italy —
Zagato is known for creating unique cars for its clients, collectable
vehicles that can be viewed more closely to investments than something
to entice the passionate driver. You buy the car, and Zagato transforms
it into something very different from the original, you keep it in your
garage and then you sell it at auction for big money. Such as its
latest example, the Maserati GS Zagato. This new model was created by Zagato for a guy called Paolo Boffi, who according to Zagato's press release is a well-known entrepreneur in
the furnishing and luxury design sector. Zagato explains that in the most classic
traditions of exclusive collections that inspired the creativity of car
designers in the '50s and '60s, Paolo Boffi commissioned from Zagato a
customised look for his Maserati GS Spyder. The car will be shown at the Villa d’Este, which is held
in Cernobbio, Italy, between the 20th and the 22nd
of April 2007, and one could be forgiven for thinking that the car
was created to be shown off at one of the world's elite car
shows. Zagato
explains that it proposed a design that evoked the historical Maserati
A6 G Zagato of
1954 in the creation of this new vehicle, a classic car that it
believes was one of the most beautiful Italian sedans ever built,
and which sits
at the top of every collector's wish list today. As
such the
Maserati GS Zagato, like its celebrated ancestor, has all-aluminium
bodywork and bears the Trident on the bonnet and the Z on the wing -
highlighting its Maserati and Zagato origins - and it expresses Italian
excellence in its smooth shape. The Italian car customiser explains
that powerful and reliable mechanics are matched with
an elegant yet sporty style, and that the car is for purists of
the compact coupé. This is strictly a two-seater, hatchback
design with a streamlined
profile and a neat tail. A spin-off from the Maserati Spyder, and smaller
than the car it's based upon, the Maserati GS Zagato has a
wheelbase 180mm shorter. Zagato says that together with its extraordinary torsional rigidity this provides the vehicle with excellent handling and stability
on curves. As
far as the vehicles performance specifications go, nothing has been
revealed by Zagato. These vehicles are rarely commissioned to be
driven regularly, and the tech specs are secondary to the design of the
vehicles and their worth on the market as a special edition created by
Zagato. This Maserati GS Zagato is based on the Maserati
GranSport Spyder, which is powered by a 4.2-litre V8 producing
298kW (400 hp), so the rear-wheel drive custom car is likely to feature
a similar output. The Maserati GS
Zagato will be revealed at the Concours d’Elegance Villa
d’Este, Cernobbio, Italy from the 20th of 2007. Related Articles: - Aston Martin
