Paris,
France —
Mazda will reveal a number of new models at the 2008 Paris Motor Show
including the focal point of its exhibit, the Kiyora concept.
Like all Mazda concept cars, it's Japanese name is
symbolic of its function.
In this case the translation of Kiyora is 'clean
and pure', so it's not surprising this design is about environmentally
friendly motoring.
The new concept car could be the precursor to the
next generation Mazda3, one of the company's best selling models.
It looks somewhat similar to the leaked images of the
new Mazda3 that surfaced on the 'Net a few months ago.
Powered by a "next-generation four-cylinder
direct-injection engine" that will "contribute to excellent fuel
economy and low CO2 emissions" the new concept car will showcase
Mazda's upcoming engine technology.
As well as the new low emission direct injection
engine technology, the Mazda Kiyora adheres to the design principles
epitomised in Lotus cars: low weight, low impact motoring.
These principles are expected to make
their way into the new Mazda3, which could be one of the most efficient
cars in its class.
The Kiyora concept's weight is kept to a minimum
which ensures that everything has less impact, especially the engine,
and Mazda has revealed the 'urban compact car' will be based on an
all-new platform.
Mazda says the new concept car will "minimise
weight and maximise
safety and driving pleasure" and will showcase a new interior with
innovative functions "that support a youthful lifestyle".
This probably means iPod connectivity, hard disc
inbuilt, and maybe an oversized sunroof.
With a highly conceptual and fluid design,
the Kiyora "represents the
harmony between driving pleasure and environmental and safety features
aspired to in Mazda's long-term technology development vision,
'Sustainable Zoom-Zoom'" claims the company.
The overall design came from the idea of a city
car "cutting cleanly through an urban landscape" and the style
was inspired by flowing water.
Also on the Mazda stand at the '08 Paris Motor
Show will be the face lifted Mazda MX-5.
Already leaked by one Spanish website, the new
Mazda MX-5 gets a more aggressive and less 'cute' face than the
previous model.
The headlights are slightly angled at the
extremities and the front air dam is a new shape, which updates the
look of the roadster nicely.
Mazda will also show off two new diesel models in
the form of the Mazda6 and Mazda2.
Powered by a MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine,
the new Mazda6 Diesel is expected to provide a big boost in sales in
European markets where diesel passenger cars often make more financial
sense.
The Mazda2 Diesel will be powered by a frugal
1.6-litre MZ-CD turbo diesel engine that is likely to make it one of
the most efficient cars in its class.
Following record sales of the Mazda2 in Australia
this year, there chances of the feisty diesel model arriving Down Under
are improving.
