Tokyo, Japan
- Mazda has confirmed that it will be manufacturing it's Mazda2 in a
new state-of-the-art plant in Thailand by mid-2010.
Australian
customers will be able to purchase the all-new sedan version of the
popular light hatch, as Mazda plan to bring the new version to
Australian shores.
Mazda Australia managing director, Doug
Dickson, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer Australians the
all-new Mazda2 sedan and moving to Thailand production enables us to do
this."
50,000 Mazda2s will be produced at the recently opened multi-million
dollar Auto Alliance Thailand passenger car plant.
The
Mazda2 has until now been built in Japan, which gains a 10% import fee
(5% from January 1) but Australia's free trade agreement with Thailand
means there will be no import fee on the car from mid-2010, when the
sedan will go on sale here.
Mazda2 sedan shares the same 2,490mm
wheelbase as its hatchback sibling and will be powered by the same
1.5-litre, 76kw petrol engine.
The Mazda2 is one of the top
selling light cars thanks to its styling, quality and practicality. The
hatch alone this year has sold 11,000 units and enjoys an 11 per cent
share of its segment.
