Hiroshima, Japan — Mazda will officially launch its second generation small hatchback, the Mazda3, at the Bologna Motor Show on December the 3rd.

The Mazda3 sedan has already broken cover, seen for the first time in the flesh at the L.A. Auto Show, but the hatchback has not been seen until now.

Mazda issued a press release that states "The new-generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback adopts the same characteristics as its sedan counterpart, offering sporty driving and a dynamic design, together with top class environmental and safety performance."

One of the new engines for the Mazda3 will include a new 2.2-litre diesel engine replacing the older 2.0-litre mill.

Mazda is pushing the 'green' theme with its new second generation small car, claiming that the "...new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine is a high-performance clean diesel powerplant with top class output, fuel economy and refinement".

According to the Japanese company the new-generation diesel engine has outstanding emissions performance and complies with Euro 5 regulations.

Important aspects such as fuel economy and CO2 emissions have been greatly improved compared to the current 2.0-litre version.

Mazda has also taken the step of improving the petrol-engines, which will account for the majority of sales in Australia.

The Japanese car maker states that "All petrol engine versions of the new-generation Mazda3 will offer even further advanced environmental performance, including the world's first vehicle catalyst to be constructed with single nanotechnology.

Accoring to Mazda, this new development reduces the use of scarce resources such as platinum and palladium in the construction phase.

We'll have more details next week when the Mazda3 hatch is deployed in Bologna, Italy.
