Adelaide, Australia — The new Lancer has been very successful for Mitsubishi both in Australia and internationally. Building
on the Lancer's popularity, the Japanese car company is offering a
mid-range performance upgrade on some models which slots in between the
entry level Lancer and the hot shoe Evolution model. Priced from
$29,790, the new 2.4-litre Lancer VRX sedan model replaces the
2.0-litre version and delivers more power and torque for a
slightly higher price, giving the vehicles improved real-world
performance. As well as upgrading the VRX's engine, there's also
the all-new super luxury 'Aspire' variant of the Lancer that comes with
the bigger motor. Mitsubishi predicts that many mid-size and
large car buyers looking for more economy will see the $33,990
Lancer Aspire's premium interior and high safety levels - with seven
airbags - and make the switch. The new 2.4-litre Lancer cars
output 125kW @ 6000rpm and 226Nm of torque @ 4100rpm, and share much of
their engine architecture with the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV's
powerplant. Along with the addition of the 2.4-litre Lancer, all
2009 model Lancers get minor interior updates such as chrome accents on
the air vents, and improved sound insulation to create a quieter cabin. Chris
Maxted, the passenger vehicle product planning manager at Mitsubishi
Australia, anticipates big things for the future of the once-humble
Lancer. "The 2009 model year updates are just the tip of the iceberg for the Lancer range," Mr Maxted said. In
the coming months, Mitsubishi will unveil a trendy new wagon model
called the Sportback Lancer, which will be followed by a $40,000
turborcharged all-wheel drive Subaru WRX rival, the Ralliart Lancer. "As
well as the introduction of the new 2.4-litre Aspire and VRX models, in
the coming months we will expand the Lancer line-up even further, with
the arrival of the all-new Sportback hatch," added Maxted. "Close on the Sportback's heels will be the fantastic all-new Lancer Ralliart sedan and hatch," said Mr Maxted. Offering
a taste of the Evolution's banzai power and AWD traction but at a much
lower price point, the new Mitsubishi Ralliart sedan and wagon are
expected to be big hits with enthusiasts. "These are cars that
provide performance with attitude, at an affordable price, and are
designed to give our competitors a real run for their money," said
Chris Maxted. Packed with the industry's strongest warranty (comprehensive
5 year/130,000km whole vehicle warranty, backed by a 10 year/160,000km
powertrain warranty and a 5 year/unlimited km
roadside assistance package), the new 2009 Lancer range will give its
rivals a run for their monies. For more information on the Mitsubishi Lancer and Lancer Evolution cars, check out our independent road tests. 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Pricing: Vehicle
