Geneva, Switzerland —
Ford's European branch has been teasing us with 'Verve' concept cars
for the last 12 months, leading many people to speculate that it would
drop the Fiesta name for Verve. Direct from the Geneva Motor Show, we can confirm that this is not the case - Ford will retain the Fiesta name. With
the production version that will go on sale globally now unveiled, it
is clear that the Verve concepts were used as the basis for the new
design. Both 3- and 5-door models will be produced and this Euro
designed and built vehicle will be one of the first European Ford
vehicles to be sold in the United States, something that Ford CEO Alan
Mulally has been keen to do since he scored to the plum job in late
2006 after leaving Boeing. One of the most important new models
for Ford's worldwide ambitions to be #1, the new Fiesta design is
heavily reliant on Ford Europe's 'Kinetic' design DNA, which can
also be seen in the Ford Mondeo which was recently launched in Australia. Both
petrol and diesel engines will be offered when the new model begins to
initially filter into Europe later in the year, and standard features
will include things like a push-button ignition, keyless entry and
fuel-saving electronic steering. Though it will face increased
competition from other compact rivals, Ford is expected to have very
keen pricing on the new models and together with a high-tech interior
the package could be a winner for the Blue Oval. Ford showed off a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine similar to the current engine, with 85kW (116hp). The
European-destined models will be built in Spain, but global models
coming to American, Asia (including Australia) are likely to be built
elsewhere. Australian deliveries of the all-new Fiesta are expected in 2009. Related articles:
