Wolfsburg, Germany — Volkswagen watchers have been eagerly awaiting the
next generation Golf, tentatively known as the Mk.VI (the current model
is the Mk V), which was supposed to make it's debut at the 2008 Geneva
Motor Show. The car's March 2008 debut in Switzerland
was supposed to be followed by production and then sales of the all-new
vehicle late in 2008but all this has now changed. Volkswagen's
most important model, the car that keeps the company financially fit,
has been delayed by at least six months. In reality, this won't hurt
Volkswagen's bottom line, but Golf fans will certainly be a tad
disappointed. The official launch date for the new Golf
Mk.VI is now September 2008, the Paris Motor Show to be precise.
Production and sales of the next generation VW Golf will then begin in
early 2009. The reason for the delay is rumoured to be because Martin
Winterkorn, the new VW chief, wasn't happy with the new design of the
Golf Mk.VI and requested some changes be made. Obviously
this has huge ramifications to the production line, and depending
on how much Winterkorn wants the cars changed, it could necessitate
costly changes to the production line affecting plastic moulding and
possibly even metal stamping processes.
