Germany - Recent photos have emerged of what is to be the next-generation
Porsche 911, codenamed the 998, which will replace the current model in
2011.
As the case with every 911, styling changes are
minimal, but the 998 has visibly wider tracks front and rear and is also
slightly longer.
The 911 Turbo-style air intake vents that are
present in front of the rear wheel arch and the small fog lights on the
front bumper are no more than stickers - Porsche engineer's idea of
disguising the look of the 2011 model.
Other noticeable changes are the front headlights
that sit more upright, a set of LED daytime running lights, LED side
indicators and LED tail lights. Also, instead of the mirrors protruding
from the A-pillar's the mirrors now reside on on the shoulder
of the bodywork, I'm not sure what this will do for the aerodynamics of
the car but it will create better visibility for the driver.
Don't be fooled by the oversize rear boot-lip
spoiler that looks like a throwback to the 959 hypercar, it is another
tool designed by Porsche to disguise the look of the 998. Instead,
reports say that the 2011 Porsche 911 will have an all-new retractable
rear spoiler.
Porsche are playing their cards very close to
their chest, but we expect that the same direct-injection flat-six
engine from the current model will be carried over, with minimal
updates – for increased efficiency and lower emissions.
