Trollhattan,
Sweden
– Ahead
of it's public unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show
in September, recent pictures have emerged of Saab’s new 9-5
flagship sedan.
Sources are unknown but we believe the photos are
from Trollhattan, Sweden, where the 9-5 will be assembled. We can only
anticipate that Saab will release its own official images of the 9-5
sedan in the coming weeks.
Even though Saab's new 2011 9-5 sedan shares the
same front aspects as it's predecessors, the overall line and body
shape are totally new for Saab. The 2011 model’s roof is lower and
continues it's sleek and smooth lines into the rounded rear,
making it look almost like a coupè. Styling cues from 9-4X BioPower
concept are clearly present — especially when viewing the wagon model.
The dark interior matches the overall sleekness of
the vehicle , taking some of its design cues from the 9-3. The 9-5
sedan appears to be a mostly all-original design. Judging by these
photos, the 9-5 does share the GM corporate steering wheel also seen in
the Buick LaCrosse and Opel Insignia, as well as the Buick’s rear-seat
monitors. The radio controls are GM-derivative, but the gauges and
overall design theme are clearly Saab unique. We’d expect to see wood
trim in addition to the sport-style trim shown.
The 9-5 will gain some extra weight, height and
length over the current model. The wheelbase has been extended by
14 cm.
The 2011 Saab 9-5 sedan will be up against rivals
such as the
Cadillac CTS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S80.
The Saab 9-5 will come with a choice of manual and
automatic transmissions and a variety of turbo-charged powertrains
ranging from lower-output 1.6-litre four-cylinders and a higher-output
2.8-litre V6 that will be available in the European market. The
U.S. gets a larger 3.6-litre V6, which is the same engine found in the
Buick Lacrosse. A Hybrid powertrain has not yet been ruled out
and expect to see a wide variety of diesel options in the
European market.
