Subaru isn't expected to unveil the new 2008 WRX STI performance car
until later in the year at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, but these
images are a good indication of how the new fired-up Subaru will turn
out. The photos are from Subaru in Japan, and show the full range of STI 'accessories' available for the new Impreza. As
well as a more aggressive body kit, which includes low side skirts, a
slightly different rear apron design, new fog lights, a lower front lip
spoiler and some new 18-inch alloy wheels, the STI accessories also
include a number of interior upgrades. There's a range of gear knobs to
enhance the feeling of gear changes, and even carbon fibre look
cladding for the inside mirror. No performance tweaks
appear to be on the manifest, though there is mention of an STI timing
belt, though how much difference this would make to your lap times
around Suzuka is anyone's guess. One thing the bonafide
Subaru Impreza WRX STI is likely to have that isn't represented on
these images is an oversized rear wing and an enlarged hood scoop. The
hood scoop is an iconic WRX STI feature, and is expected to be larger
so that it can accommodate the enlarged intercooler that the up-rated
turbo 4-cylinder engine will be carrying. At the very
least, these images will provide the millions of Subaru fans something
to tide them over until the new STI arrives, which is going to be a
very big deal. There's a lot resting on the new halo car's shoulders
after the almost universal condemnation of the new Impreza design. If
the STI doesn't appease the faithful, there is the risk of a backlash
that may result in reduced sales for the new model. Related
