The Volkswagen BlueMotion uses 3.8-litres/100km

Wolfsburg, Germany - Last time we saw the Golf BlueMotion was at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney last year.

Now, Volkswagen is pleased to announced that the 2011 Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion has been launched in Australia, making it the second most fuel efficient vehicle in the country.

The Golf BlueMotion achieves a fuel economy figure of 3.8-litres per 100km and significantly reducing CO2 emissions to only 99g/km whilst offering the everyday comfort, safety and practicality of a well-equipped five-door Golf hatch.

Sitting under the bonnet is an efficient 1.6-litre, four-cylinder common rail TDI engine developing 77kW of power and 250Nm of torque featuring several systems and modifications to optimise fuel efficiency. These include a Start/Stop system, a multifunction computer providing visual gear change recommendation for optimum fuel consumption, a revised engine management system and a reduced idle speed. The modifications increase the engine’s efficiency to allow greater performance while  simultaneously using less fuel.

Further gains in economy are made through aerodynamic improvements,  low rolling resistance tyres for reduced drag and changes to the drivetrain - including longer ratios in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears to decrease engine speed.

Changes to the Golf's body are subtle in appearance yet extensive with modifications to the underside of the vehicle to smooth the air flow low.

Sports styling kit improves aerodynamics and closed sections of the front grille help reduce cooling system drag as less heat is rejected by the engine. Ride height is lowered by 15 mm to further reduce frontal and aerodynamic drag.

To further reduce weight and aid efficiency, the Golf BlueMotion comes with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.

Customers can now purchase the 2011 Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion from $28,990 (manufacturer's list price).
