Powered by a 198kW version of the Golf GTI's 2.0-litre engine, this wagon ain't slow

Essen, Germany — Volkswagen
chose the 2007 Essen Motor Show to unveil its latest concept car, the
Golf RaVe 270. The vehicle is called the 'RaVe' because it has an pumping 1400 Watt
sound system with no less than three flush-mounted sub woofers. The '270' part of the concept car's name
relates to the amount of power the 2.0-litre turbo engine generates -
270 horsepower, or 198kW of power - which is one of the highest states
of tune the 2.0 TFSI engine (first seen on the Golf GTI) has even provided. Apart
from a new version of the 2.0-litre turbo engine and an
ear-bleeding audio system, Volkswagen says the inspiration
behind the concept was to get the GTI and R32 Golf 'feeling' into a
station wagon (the Golf Variant is the wagon version) complete with a
4WD system. The
powerful engine and 4WD transmission give this Golf wagon concept
serious speed. It's able to crack the 100km/h mark from standstill in
5.8 seconds and will hit 200km/h in about 21 seconds. It's
electronically limited to 250km/h, but would surpass this mark easily
without the limiter. This is because the
engine develops 198kW (270hp) @ 6000rpm, and 350Nm of torque @ 3000rpm.
Volkswagen says that the boost in power was made possible thanks
to turbocharger, intercooling and
engine electronics modifications. The
engine is hooked up to Volkswagen's popular DSG dual clutch
transmission, which has 6-speeds and apportions power to all four
wheels. VW claims the DSG saves fuel as well, where the average fuel
consumption of the Golf RaVe 270 is just 9.1L/100km. Though the Golf Variant (wagon) is not available in Australia at this stage, the Golf
RaVe 270 concept receives a number of visual upgrades that transform
the vehicle from mundane wagon to eye-catching sports car. All the new body work extras on the VW Golf RaVe 270
concept (including side skirts, front and rear aprons, headlights,
brake lights, grille, et cetera) are part of a new design line
available to the public. A few of the more
interesting visual features are the new look headlights that include
LED running lights and the quad exhausts at the rear of the car. Large 19-inch 'Zaragoza' wheels together with a 20mm drop kit give the Golf RaVe 270 concept a more grounded stance while large Brembo brakes indicate the performance potential of the chassis. While
the VW Golf Variant RaVe 270 is a wagon, don't expect to cram too much
gear in the boot as there's a number of expensive and very powerful
subwoofers in residence. Featuring a customized
interior with exclusive
leather bucket seats, the RaVe 270 is all about making noise. With
a 1400 Watt sound system the whole street will know when this
vehicle is cruising by. According to Volkswagen, "This
system really hammers." It's got more subwoofers, LCD screens, and chrome highlights than most night clubs and is based on the brand-new RNS 510
radio-navigation system first seen in the VW Tiguan.
There's a touchscreen LCD monitor in the front of the car to control
the stereo system (which uses a 400MHz Power-PC processor), which is
hooked up to a 30Gb hard disk
drive. This RNS 510 system interfaces with the huge stereo, which has a total of 13
loudspeakers and multiple amplifiers. There's an 880
Watt subwoofer and two other 250 Watt subwoofers that "are
responsible for the distinctly 'palpable' sound" according to VW. There's also a pair of
12-inch monitors that fold out of the tailgate. Related
