Los Angeles, America —
The third concept car in Volkswagen's "Up!" range has made its debut at
the Los Angeles Motor Show. The Volkswagen Space Up! Blue Concept has
the almost the exact same design as the Space Up! Concept, only it
features a true zero emissions engine as opposed to a hybrid
petrol-electric engine. For more details on the VW Space Up! design and interior features click here. Powered
by a 45kW (60hp) electric motor, the tiny van-like vehicle has a top
speed of 75mph and a potential range of up to 220 miles. The
VW Space Up! Blue Concept also has solar panels to recharge capacitors,
but were not 100% sure whether they are for interior car functions or
the engine. With its electric engine the
car can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 13.7 seconds. Volkswagen
notes that the only issue standing in the way of producing a vehicle
such as this is battery technology. "However, a prerequisite for this technology are durable
and affordable lithium-ion batteries with a high charge capacities.
With their help, transportation could become "electrified" – i.e.
converted from combustion engines to electric motors – in a stepwise
manner, initially in the big cities. The infrastructure needed for this
is simple: electrical outlets! Step by step, public and private parking
spaces and parking garages would have to be equipped with "electric
service pumps" to offer charging capabilities. Subaru is currently one of the leaders in terms of high density lithium-ion batteries for use in cars, but this is still an ongoing research project. - Volkswagen Touareg R50 (2007) - Volkswagen Up! Concept (2008) - Volkswagen Golf
