Goulburn War Memorial
New South Wales
By James Anthony
Goulburn, NSW
Overlooking Goulburn is the War Memorial to the men who died
during the First World War (1914-1918). It is a rough stone
square tower that was built in 1924 by the local townsfolk.
It is 20 metres high and dominates the skyline by day, although
its true eye-catching nature is more obvious at night because
it is lit by floodlamps and stands out for miles.
To get to the top of the tower there is an internal staircase
running around the walls and the climb is not difficult. It
is cool inside and the view from the top is worth the climb.
It is worth noting that in winter - even in afternoon sunshine
- you can still find frosted plants in the shadows of the
tower.
At the entrance to the site there is a small military museum
that is open between 10am and 2pm. Admission is free, although
donations are welcomed.
