Mt Mawson
Located
closer to Hobart than the Ben Lomond resort, it also has a
lower altitute of just 1250m. Despite the relatively low-lying
mountain, it's location in the south of Tasmania ensures it's
never without the pow-pow.
Indeed, some claim the steepest slope in Australia is to
be found at Mt Mawson, which is run not by greedy corporations,
but the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association, which is further
made up of a number of independent ski clubs.
These include the Mount Mawson Ski Club, Alpine Club of Southern
Tasmania, Ski Club of Tasmania, Oldina Ski Club, Wellington
Ski Club, Hobart Walking Club and the University Ski Club.
Located just one and a half hours drive from Hobart, Mt Mawson
lays claim to just three rope tows, but don't be put off by
its seemingly beginner-bias: Mt Mawson can be quite treacherous
- and challenging - for the uninitiated.
Mt Mawson is also quite popular with cross country skiiers,
with more popular regions including Mount Field West, the
Rodway Range and the Tarn Shelf.
