The Daintree has been World Heritage listed for its value
of being the world's most complex tropical rainforest ecosystem.
Its diversity of plant and animal life is far ahead of anything
else found in Australia and is a pure example of how the country
once looked - albeit millions of years ago.
The Daintree has 12 of the Earth's 19 primitive flowering
plant families, 30% of Australia's reptile, frog and marsupial
species, two-thirds of the nation's butterfly and bat species,
and a fifth of the bird species.
Situated two-hours drive north of Cairns,
the Daintree covers some 1200 square kilometres.
It is perfect for green-oriented tourists and visitors can
choose from a number of eco-friendly places to stay.
There are plenty of trails, lookouts and tours to take, but
it is advisable to take an umbrella or coat. The Daintree
gets rained upon about once every three days (120 days a year)
and cops more than 2metres of rain annually. The average temperature
is 28 degrees Celsius.
