Douglas Hotels & Bookings Service
The
small town of Port Douglas was founded in 1877 to act as the
port for the nearby Hodgkinson River goldfields.
Named after a Queensland premier, John Douglas, the town
became very wealthy but was superceded by Cairns
some 70 km to the south.
In 1911 a cyclone ripped the town apart.
In recent years Port Douglas' 4000 residents have seen a
major boom in tourism with both international and Australian
guests wanting to savour its relaxing tropical beauty.
Like many of Australia's northern reaches there is a jellyfish
season - November through to May - where the potentially deadly
Stingers appear off the
beaches.
However, there are plenty of swimming pools or other activities
to indulge in, including trips to the Great
Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation, and the Daintree
Rainforest.
Outer Barrier Reef Cruise
Snorkel, dive, swim or perhaps even take a scenic helicopter
flight over the Great Barrier Reef - all this and more on
this landmark reef experience. From Port
Douglas, you cruise in comfort out to the Agincourt Reef, on the very edge of the Great
Barrier Reef. Spend the day viewing the kaleidoscope of marine
life and intricate colored coral formations before returning
to land at the end of this very special day.
